Thankless Jobs

Every once in a while, I get a rush of appreciation for all those jobs that need to get done but I'm glad I'm not the one doing them.

Like the guy that gets to work at 3am to make the donuts.  Without him, my morning coffee wouldn't be the same.  So “thank you,” donut fryer.

And the guy who takes away the roadkill when I'm not looking.  That's one poodle that can't just get up and walk away.  So “thank you,” carcass remover.

And what about the malware writers.  Where would I be without them?  They toil for hours on end in sweaty, badly-lit rooms, often foregoing the basics (sleeping…showering...).  They work hard to keep me on guard. Without their efforts I might slip into an irreversible complacency coma.  And they're crafty little buggers.  I patch and block and firewall and scan, but do they give up?  No!  I close off one entrance, and they find a back door.  I brick up all the doors, and they come down the chimney.  I lock all the Windows®, they find a Mac.  If it wasn't for them, I might be able to get my pesky work done every day instead of having to research removal methods and download prophylactics.  Their hard work increases my knowledge base and adds to my vocabulary. Why, just this morning, I learned a new swear word while hot on the trail of the latest rogueware to hit my office.

This week, I developed an even deeper fondness for those “nerds in the back room,” since a new study indicates that I am now typically only two clicks away from malware if I visit any of the top 1000 websites. Wow. Inventive AND prolific.

So “thank you” malware authors.  Thank you for keeping me on my toes. Thank you for countless hours of unpaid overtime. Thank you for helping me ensure that the makers of Excedrin® will earn a profit.  If only there was some other phrase, a phrase similar to “thank you”, that could really express how I feel...
