What did you get for the holidays?

So, I took a break from blogging this month. To stuff myself with turkey. To painstakingly wrap gifts that were unwrapped in a matter of seconds. To thoroughly enjoy my holiday.

But this morning, as I groggily dragged in to check my email, I was greeted by an interesting article that I missed during the week of Christmas, detailing all the ways that new gadgets are being hacked.

I bet a lot of you got gadgets under the tree this year. Did Santa bring you the 60 inch, four-color, 3-D HDTV you've been drooling over. Was there a bright, shiny new XBox Kinect for your kids (or for you...it's ok to admit it)? iPads? iPods? Laptops? Netbooks?

According to Ashlee Vance's article for the New York Times, any of these devices that can connect to the Internet are open for hackers—and unfortunately, device developers are not also developing the anti-virus and protective software needed to keep their new products safe.

Happy holidays!

I usually like to offer a call to action at this point in the blog. Like "Don't forget to..." or "Remember to strengthen your...." or even "Never, never, ever...." And certainly, smart password protection and usage rules still apply in these cases. But, at this point, it seems there is not much else to do but wait for software protection to catch up to the recent advancements in technology and stay apprised of any new software developed to protect your bright, shiny new toys.
